Department Introduction

The Department of Computer Engineering at Karadeniz Technical University offers undergraduate master’s, and doctoral programs. Students who complete their undergraduate program are entitled to be Computer Engineers.

Students who are admitted to undergraduate and graduate programs but do not have sufficient English proficiency are required to attend an English preparatory program. Undergraduate students who start the preparatory class must take an English proficiency exam at the end of one academic year, while graduate students must take the exam at the end of one semester. If a graduate student fails the exam, they are given an additional semester to prepare. Students who pass the English proficiency exam are eligible to take their courses in the fall and spring semesters.

Undergraduate students, however, can only begin their courses at the beginning of each academic year after completing a one-year English preparatory program. These students also take the English proficiency exam, and those who pass can begin their courses in the following academic year. However, undergraduate students who fail the English proficiency exam at the end of the preparatory program must pass the exam during their four-year undergraduate studies.

The department provides classroom and laboratory facilities located in the department building on the Kanuni Campus (Main Campus) of Karadeniz Technical University to serve undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students.

Education and History

The Department of Computer Engineering, which started education in 1993, provides undergraduate (Engineering) education with a four-year program. Starting from the 1997-1998 academic year, the Foreign Language Preparation Program (English) was introduced in the Computer Engineering Department, and an English-medium-of-instruction was implemented. Those who are successful in the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam are directly registered to the 1st grade. Those who fail this exam study for one year in the foreign language preparation program.

Since Computer Engineering constitutes the basis of advanced technology in the world and our country, graduates can work for a wide range of sectors. Graduates from the department can work in all public and private sector institutions, higher education and research institutions, and in design, production, quality control, operation, and system security stages.
