Founded on June 14, 2012, the Department of Marine Sciences and Technology Engineering (DMSTE) at Karadeniz Technical University’s Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences is dedicated to advancing education and research in marine sciences and marine technologies. The department was established to train highly skilled experts who can contribute to both academia and the marine industry, addressing the growing national and global needs in these fields.
DMSTE comprises two main branches: the Marine Sciences Department and the Marine Technology Department. The Marine Sciences Department focuses on physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanography, equipping students with fundamental and applied knowledge in marine ecosystems. The Marine Technology Department emphasizes coastal structures, offshore engineering, marine biotechnology, underwater archaeology, aquaculture technology, and advanced marine measurement systems. Graduates from both branches are expected to be well-versed in sustainable marine resource management and ecosystem-based approaches.
Although undergraduate education has not yet commenced, the department launched a master's program in 2022 under the Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology. The faculty currently includes four professors and one research assistant, fostering an academic environment that supports interdisciplinary learning and innovative research.
Located in the natural surroundings of Çamburnu, Sürmene, the Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences offers modern educational and recreational facilities, including an indoor sports hall, outdoor courts, dining halls, and student amenities. DMSTE students benefit from a multidisciplinary approach to oceanography, integrating various scientific disciplines to enhance their understanding of marine environments and prepare them for careers in research, industry, and environmental stewardship.
