BIOBLACK Project
Project Overview
Full Title: Raising Awareness for the Black Sea People to Recognize and Protect Black Sea Biodiversity (BIOBLACK-BSB00794)
Programme: Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme, co-funded by the European Union.
Duration: 18 months (July 31, 2025 - January 31, 2027).
Partners: Three countries are involved: Türkiye (Lead Partner - KTÜ), Bulgaria (IFR), and Romania (Mare Nostrum).
Main Objective
To raise public awareness and enhance the protection of Black Sea biodiversity through innovative tools, cross-border cooperation, and citizen engagement.
Key Activities
Activity 1.1: State of Art Report: Partners will create a national and consolidated regional report on Black Sea biodiversity, including species, threats, and legal gaps.
Activity 1.2: Public Awareness Methodologies:
3D-Printed Food Pyramid: Creating a tactile, triangular food pyramid with ~30 miniature 3D-printed marine organisms (plankton to predators) for educational displays.
Sea Surveys: Organizing boat trips with sampling and underwater photography to showcase marine life.
Workshops: Hosting national workshops in Trabzon, Varna, and Constanta to present findings and the 3D pyramid.
Awareness Materials: Producing and distributing e-booklets, brochures, posters, and T-shirts.
Activity 1.3: Citizen Science App: Developing a multi-language mobile app ("BLACKPYRAMID") for citizens (fishermen, divers, etc.) to report species sightings, helping to map invasive and threatened species.
Activity 1.4: Stakeholder Training: Conducting extensive training for students, fishermen, and local authorities using the project's tools (app, pyramid, materials), aiming for 60 events and hundreds of participants.
Expected Outputs & Results
Outputs: A joint regional study, 3 public awareness events (workshop + sea survey), and one jointly developed citizen science application.
Results:
Strengthened cross-border cooperation for long-term biodiversity protection.
A sustainable solution (the app and educational materials) that other institutions can adopt.
Increased public knowledge and engagement in protecting the Black Sea ecosystem.
Horizontal Principles
The project commits to environmental sustainability (digital materials, recycling), social inclusion (encouraging participation of people with disabilities), and gender balance.
