Registration and Paperwork

The enrollment process for newly arriving international students at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) is facilitated by the International Relations Office. This typically takes place 1-2 weeks prior to the course registration period, coinciding with the official commencement of the academic year. Upon enrollment, students are provided with access to the Student Information System (BYS), a university email account, and a unique student identification number.

Student Enrollment Certificate:

  • Also referred to as a "student letter" or "öğrenci belgesi" in Turkish, this document can be obtained from the Student Affairs Office (Öğrenci İşleri).
  • It contains essential details about your academic program at KTU, including your department/faculty, the duration of your studies, and your student number.
  • Be sure to note the important information on this document, especially your student number (“Öğrenci numarası”), as it will be required throughout your academic activities.

For Ph.D. and Postdoctoral Researchers: You will receive tailored instructions and guidance for your enrollment process. Please reach out to the International Office for further information and support.

Obtaining a Tax ID Number

Obtaining a tax identification number is an essential step for various administrative and official procedures in Türkiye, such as opening a bank account at specific banks or arranging health insurance. This number is also useful for completing certain tasks before receiving your residence permit, as it serves as an official identifier required by many institutions.

You can obtain a tax ID number by visiting https://ivd.gib.gov.tr. Select the “Doğrulamalar” tab from the menu, then click on “Yabancılar için potansiyel vergi kimlik numarası / Potential Tax Number Confirmation for Foreigners” and complete the required form.

This process can be completed either online or in person by visiting the nearest tax office.

Opening a Bank Account

There are VakıfBank and Ziraat Bank branches conveniently located on the Kanuni Campus of Karadeniz Technical University (KTU).

Required Documents to Open a Bank Account:

  • Valid Passport: Must not be older than 10 years. Alternatively, a valid residence permit can be used if applicable.
  • Foreigner’s ID Number or Tax ID Number:
    • Foreigner’s ID Number is issued by civil registration offices, under the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Interior.
    • Tax ID Number is issued by tax offices, under the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Finance.
  • Proof of Valid Residence Address in Türkiye:
    • Examples include a copy of an electricity, water, natural gas, or phone bill addressed to your name, issued by a Turkish service provider within the last three months.
    • Alternatively, the printed address on your passport can be used if applicable.

Additional Notes:

  • If a valid passport or residence permit cannot be provided, an official document validating your national ID, issued and approved by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Finance, may be eligible.

Bank ATMs on Campus:

KTU provides easy access to ATMs of major banks for students and staff.

Important Steps for Students:

  • Obtain your Tax ID Number beforehand.
  • Inform the KTU Erasmus Office about your intent to open a bank account for additional guidance.

Residence and Work Permit

The Directorate General of Immigration Management (Göç İdaresi Genel Müdürlüğü), under the Ministry of Interior, is the authorized governmental body for residence permits in Türkiye.

For stays exceeding three months (90 days), all foreign staff and students must apply for a residence permit, regardless of their citizenship.

Applicants for residence permits must ensure they apply within the legal timeframe permitted for their stay in Türkiye after entry. For instance, if you have a one-month visa or visa exemption, you must apply within that one-month period.

For extension applications, the process must be initiated at least two months (60 days) prior to the expiration of the current residence permit.

Obtainig an E-Devlet Password

The E-Devlet (E-Government) platform provides an online gateway to a range of services offered by various governmental institutions in Türkiye. To obtain an E-Devlet password, you need to visit a PTT (Post Office) branch with the following:

·         A valid passport

·         Your residence permit

·         An active Turkish mobile phone number
