The Turkish Environment Agency selected Karadeniz Technical University as a pilot university within the scope of zero waste practices
KTU has become one of the 7 pilot universities within the scope of the “Establishment of Zero Waste Practices and Deposit Management Systems on Campuses and Development of Standard Practices in Türkiye”.
Under the responsibility of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change and the execution of the Turkish Environment Agency (TEA), the infrastructure of the 'Deposit Information Management System' has been completed. This system aims to recycle disposable beverage containers and contribute to the economy. As of January 1, 2023, a national pilot scheme study was initiated. With this project, materials that are difficult to collect and have negative effects on the environment and human health when they become waste will be recycled using a successful collection system.
With the pilot scheme, it is aimed to improve zero waste practices throughout the nation. In line with national environmental strategies and policies, it is intended to determine the necessary costs for the development of the environment and green areas, contributing to the fight against climate change and the transition to the circular economy. In addition, it is also targeted to raise awareness of zero waste, update the zero waste management system, and establish and operate the zero waste system. In this context, a technical visit will be paid to Karadeniz Technical University in the coming days with the participation of the Ministry, Agency, and project team. In this context, relevant units at Karadeniz Technical University will create and present checklists to be used in the project in question.
Testing in 2023, Application in 2024
The infrastructure of the Deposit Information Management System will be created within the scope of efforts to implement deposit practices for certain beverage containers. As of January 01, 2023, pilot schemes for deposit applications have been initiated nationwide.
With the pilot practices based on the reward system to be carried out until the end of 2023, all citizens will be informed about the transition process and practices of the deposit application. After the nationwide preparation and testing, the actual deposit practices for beverage containers will be officially started on January 01, 2024.
